FR ANTHONY NORMAN NOBLE

Fr Tony Noble is an Australian priest, currently Rector of St Mark’s Church, Fitzroy in Melbourne, Victoria. He was born, raised & ordained in Adelaide, South Australia. He is 56 years old and single.

Fr Noble has been the Vicar (Rector) of St Mark’s for 18 years. It is one of Australia’s leading Anglo-catholic parishes, and celebrated its 150th anniversary on July 1st. It is an inner-city parish – much like Hillcrest. St Mark’s is well known for its community work. It runs a Community Centre for disadvantaged people, which serves 100 people a day. The Centre budget is $350,000, which includes food distribution and sporting teams. The parish pioneered the first Anglican ministry to people suffering with AIDS in the 1980’s.

During his time as Rector St Mark’s congregation has grown from 25 to over 100. There is a lively ministry to a congregation ranging from young families to singles. The largest age-group is 30 – 55, and this is reflected in a varied parish programme of pastoral care, community outreach and regular social activities. The worship programme includes Daily Mass, Marian devotions, Benediction and silent prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. Under his leadership the parish undertook a $1 million restoration of its historic church in the 1990’s.

Although most of his ministry has been in Australia, Fr Noble has a wide experience of the Anglican Communion. He has preached in England and America, attended international conferences and had articles published in various Anglican journals. He makes an annual pilgrimage/retreat at the shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham and is the

Australasian Provincial Master of the Society of the Holy Cross (SSC). Other Anglican societies to which he belongs include: Priest Associate of Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham, Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament, Society of Mary and he is an associate of the Sisters of St Margaret (SSM).

The High School he attended was Pulteney Grammar School, an Anglican school. He was an accountant before ordination. He has strong connections with the Church of England, having lived in London for 18 months before hearing the call to the priesthood, and has been a frequent visitor to the USA for 17 years!

Fr Noble lists his main interests as history, travel and sport – particularly Aussie Rules football. He was a High School athlete. To relax he enjoys movies, music, dinner parties and the beach!
